Will AI Replace Developers? My Research on the Future of Programming in 2035

As an Architect, I’ve been closely following the rapid advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI), and I couldn’t ignore the pressing question: Will AI take over programming jobs? After spending weeks researching trends, expert opinions, and industry data, I want to share my findings with you. This isn’t just speculation—it’s what the numbers say about our future.

The Rise of AI in Software Development
AI-powered tools like GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT are already transforming the way we write and optimize code. During my research, I found that AI is expected to handle repetitive coding tasks, automate debugging, and even create full applications with minimal human intervention in the next decade.

One key finding: In 2025, the global developer population is estimated at 100 million. 


But AI’s impact could significantly reduce that number by 2035.

What Programming Skills Will Become Obsolete?



Based on industry trends and expert analysis, I discovered that some programming skills are at risk of becoming obsolete due to AI automation. Technologies such as:

  • PHP
  • Perl
  • Manual Testing
  • SQL Queries
  • Basic JavaScript & HTML

are being gradually replaced by AI-driven solutions. If you, like me, rely heavily on these, now is the time to upskill and pivot towards future-proof technologies.


The Shift in Developer Salaries



One of the most surprising insights from my research was how AI is affecting developer salaries. As AI takes over low-level coding, salaries for traditional programming roles are expected to drop. Here’s what the trend looks like:

  • 2025: $120K (average developer salary)
  • 2030: $90K
  • 2035: $50K or lower in AI-dominated fields

How Developers Can Stay Relevant
After analysing countless reports and discussions with industry experts, I realized that AI won’t replace developers—it will transform our roles. Here’s how we can stay ahead: 

✅ Step 1: Learn AI-related skills – Machine learning, prompt engineering, AI automation.
✅ Step 2: Go beyond coding – Focus on architecture, cybersecurity, and system design.
✅ Step 3: Become AI-powered – Use AI as a tool, not a threat. AI-assisted developers will be in demand!

Final Thoughts
I went into this research worried, but I came out of it with a clear understanding: AI is a powerful force, but adaptability is key. If we embrace AI and refine our skills, we will remain invaluable in the tech industry.
